I realized just the other day that I am constantly telling you how important it is to study they Bible and yet I never really expressed to you any type of methods to study the Bible with. So today I am going to rectify that error by complying a list of different sites that explain certain methods. There really is not right or wrong way,so as with most things that I suggest, I would highly recommend you read up on the different methods and find one that works for you. In this post however you are only going to find ways that I have tried or have had others suggested to me whose opinions I hold very dear.
When studying the Bible first and foremost always ask God into the study. This allows God to show you what it is that He wants you to see in the scripture. Note I said what He wants you to see. I say this because I can read a set of scripture at one point and something is revealed to me. I can go back and re-read the scripture a month or so down the road and gain totally different knowledge. I am a firm believer that God reveals to us what we need to know when we need to know it. However in order for this to happen we need to study open minded and we need to be willing to let God do the leading.
Types Of Study Methods:
- The Inductive Method: This method causes you to think about not only the text you are reading but it also causes you to look as things in the how, who, what, when and why aspects. Why what this important? How do we need to apply this to our own lives? What caused this passage to need to be written? When was this passage written? Who was this passage written for? Studying this way causes you to really dig into the scripture to find the whole meaning. In doing so it allows you to not only absorb it clearly it also always you to find ways to apply it into your own life.
- The SOAP method: If you study with Good Morning Girls then you know this method all to well. This method requires you to do a bit of journaling and in doing so you are about to absorb material as you are breaking it down. S:Scripture.Writing down the scripture you are working on. O:Observation. What do you observe that is happening in that scripture a lot of times this means that you need to read the scripture before and after the text you are studying so you now what events are surrounding the text. A: Application. How can you apply this to yourself and the circumstances in your life. Often times you will find more that one area you need to work on and that is ok journal it right on in. P: Prayer. Journal in a prayer that pertains to this scripture and what you have learned about yourself while studying it.
- Topical Studies: Now this one allows you to look up certain topics that you feel are important to you at that particular time and study them to their fullest. Now with this method one has to be a bit careful not to just seek out justification but to truly seek out wisdom.
- Read and Seek: Now this method you may also want to start a journal. Read a bit in the Bible and those verses that spoke to you jot them down. Don’t forget to include how the verses that spoke to you can be applied to you.
Here are just 4 methods to study the Bible with. There is no right or wrong way to do so, only ways that work best for you. Do you have a method that works best for you? Then feel free to share them in the comments below.
