Break school is a new term. As a matter of fact, it is a term that our second oldest came up with and well since it is different from our normal school routine and it typically happens when our local public school isn’t in session then it just sort of stuck. As a homeschooling family, we get asked a lot of questions. One of the many questions we are asked is do we take breaks when our fellow public school friends do? The short answer is no, we like to do a thing called break school.
Break schooling is simply homeschooling on a lighter schedule through traditional school breaks. Break schooling looks a tad different in the fact that you focus solely on your main subjects. As textbooks and/or curriculum is completed then you add in themed unit studies to help keep learned skills sharp.
Benefits of Break Schooling
- There is less of a review time that if you had taken a long summer or winter break: Long breaks mean that material that has been learned can be forgotten thanks to lack of use during those long breaks. Your core subject skills remain sharp and that means you just fall right in to place for the new school year when it comes time to open up those new books.
- There is no “getting back into our routine” time: Developing a routine is hard. However, it is even harder to get back into a routine after a long break. With break schooling, you are able to stay in your normal routine which means that you won’t be dragging at the beginning of the new school year because the new routine is such a huge shock to you.
- Break schooling allows you to take lots of little breaks throughout the year: One of our favorite things is that we are never limited to just certain times to take breaks. We are able to take breaks whenever we begin to feel a little overworked or overwhelmed. It also means that we don’t ever have to worry about make-up days because we always have more than enough days under our belts.
So there ya have it. I would love to know do you “break school” or will you be closing up your homeschool soon?
