Negativity into our lives. It doesn’t matter how hard we try to safeguard ourselves from it. Negativity comes in through certain music, certain shows, through certain people and even through social media. Negativity even has the ability to suck you in through your thoughts.
Philippians 4:8 states that we are to focus on things that are:
- Honorable
- Just
- Pure
- Lovely
- Commendable
- Things of excellence
- Worthy of praise
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. —Philippians 4:8
Yet, even though we know what we are supposed to fixate our attentions on it seems to be easier for us to fixate on all the negative that is going on around us. After all, those negative things seem to be the easiest to spot.
What Would Happen If:
Imagine what our days would be like if instead of allowing ourselves to be consumed with all the negative things we would, in fact, choose to focus our attention only on those things that Paul outlined. We would find more joy, peace, and comfort in our day to day life. We would be able to see a silver lining even in the darkest of times.
A few years ago my oldest attended a VBS. During that whole week, they were asked to look for “God Sightings”. These sightings could be people, places, events, animals, thoughts and well anything really. Each night the children were asked to return back to VBS share what their “God sighting” was and then they placed a glow in the dark star on a wall in the hall. At the end of the week, we were all overwhelmed. The children had literally covered the whole entire hall with glowing stars just from their “God Sightings”. Not to mention the fact that at the beginning of the week all the children struggled with this assignment and then by the end of the week the children were able to ramble off 10 to 15 things a piece.
Friends- It is easy to focus and find negative things, but, as Christians, we need to seek out good things. Fixating on the Godly things and not the other stuff. Doing so will help us to all be joyful, grateful, and overall more aware of God and His movements in our lives. It will help us to become more Christ-centered and less worldly depressed.
