Young Christians and many more seasoned Christians are struggling. They are struggling to develop a relationship with God that is deep and meaningful. A relationship that leaves them spiritually filled and yet they desire more. In fact, I am hearing more and more from people that they feel as though God is no longer talking with them. Many are longing to discover ways that will draw them closer to God. After all, as Christians, we should be growing closer to God each and every day.
Just like any relationship developing a relationship with God takes effort on our part. It means that we are willing to make God a top priority in our lives. Seeking Him above all other things that we may have going on in our lives. Inviting Him into the various areas of our lives. Growing closer to God requires that we are willing to step out in faith and trust in Him to lead, guide, and direct us.
In order to grow closer to Christ we ourselves need to do a few things:
- Schedule out devotional time from our Bibles: All those devotional books we spend money on can be great however, they should never take the place of us opening our Bible and studying God’s Word for ourselves. Now, this can be confusing sometimes when you are reading certain books or topics but there are many different resources that are available to help one truly dig into God’s Word.
- Start a prayer journal: Prayer journals are priceless. You can journal in a cheap notebook or an expensive one it really doesn’t matter. What does matter is taking the time to write down your thoughts to God. Recording those prayers for those in your life and those situations in your life that you are seeking guidance in. The beauty about a journal is not only are the requests in there but later you can go back and see how God moved in the various situations.
- Invite God in your day to day activities: Talk to God throughout the day and not just during your devotional and journaling times. Seriously, folding laundry can become a great time to have a conversation with the King, driving down the road is an acceptable to have a mini praise session and well the possibilities are endless. The more we talk to the Father, the closer we will grow to Him.
The fact is that God wants a closer relationship with us. He is simply waiting for us to actually long to grow closer to Him.
