We have all been to those Churches that don’t offer childcare or nursery service so I think we can all relate to how tiresome it can be for all parties involved. Believe you me if you are getting flustered by the whole situation imagine how the child must feel. Now we currently attend a church that offers such care but it has not always been this way. My husband and I sat through a many of church services where we got the “eye” from people because our children were making to many unwelcome noises and I can tell you from personal experience this look can make a mom want to burst out in tears. However, I thought I would share with you some things that helped us train our children to sit through a service. Now, these may not work for you but really what do you have to lose in trying them?
Practice Makes Perfect:
As soon as my little ones could sit up we started doing circle time. Now, this varied by how old the children were at the time. Also the activities we did vary by age. Singing and finger plays were are starting point, slowly we added in short stories and we built on from there. Now, this takes time and there is a lot of putting a child back to where you want them to sit. But stay calm, cool and collective. Most of all stay consistent and they will get it. The longer you do this the longer they will sit.
Pack Quiet Toys:
I like to carry books, crayons and maybe a quiet toy or two help with those mid church blues. Now make sure those toys are quiet it is very embarrassing to have a police car go off during an altar call.
Don’t Give Up:
Now It is so easy to get flustered with our children when they won’t sit still. Trust me so do all the other mothers who are sitting in there as well. You know it wasn’t too long ago when nursery and children’s church weren’t even an option. You will find that those people that are giving you the eye are not giving you the eye in a judgmental way but more of a sympathetic way. So hold your head high because you are doing a wonderful thing. You are introducing your child to the word of God. And even if you don’t think they are understanding what they are hearing they are picking up way more than you know.
