But when he, the spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and will tell you what is yet to come.
John 16:13
Recently I had a conversation with my oldest son. He was wondering why since he sought out salvation he feels a pull within himself to do certain things. Which led to a wonderful conversation about the Holy Spirit and why we have the need for the Holy Spirit. The moment we were saved we were provided the gift of the Holy Spirit and yet a lot of times we choose to ignore it due to selfish wants or ambitions. That is the beauty of free will we can submit willingly to Gods will or we can choose to buck the system provided we are prepared to face the consequences.
Why would we choose to buck the system though? I am reminded of my second oldest son. He is such a strong willed person. If you say walk he will run. He goes against the grain constantly. Now once he has disobeyed house rules he then has to face the consequences and that is when things in our house get ugly. He will scream, cry, yell and declare that I don’t love him and that he doesn’t like me. (He is only 4 so though he is corrected I really don’t put much thought in this process). Sounds like us sometimes doesn’t it. The Holy Spirit tells us to “stop, don’t do that” and we go right on ahead. We then get upset when it is time to face the repercussions of our actions.
Applying It:
God wants us to have fulfilled lives. He wants us to be something amazing for Him but we have got to listen to our guide. We must be willing to step out of our old selves and embrace the things that God is leading us to do. It is when we are truly willing to do God’s will that he can do something amazing in our lives.
This is where our words have to meet our actions. Actions speak volumes over words. We can say all day long that we love someone but if we continuously defy everything that is asked of us then are we actually showing that we love them? Absolutely not. The same holds true when we defy what the Holy Spirit is ignored. He is an extension of God telling us what we should do, who we need to reach out to, how we need to react and of course He already knows the outcome.
You are not alone in this struggle between your old self and this new creation you are becoming. In fact we all must struggle with it everyday. The fact of the matter is that the are of listening and obeying is hard. We have been bucking the rules since the day we were born in one fashion or another and yet we must try. Because it is what is expected of us and it is what is right. Just like our children we will fail and just like we do with our children God will be right there willing to help pick us up and to guide and direct us. After all God puts us out of our comfort zones sometimes to prove that His way is the best way. Which is why God knew there was a need for us to have the Holy Spirit to guide, direct and comfort us.
The Question:
What is it that God has been weighing on you heart and you have been putting off? Maybe today is the day to go ahead and take the steps toward the direction He is wanting you to go.
The Prayer:
Lord,
We may not always understand why you ask us to do the things you want us to do but we know that you have our best interest at heart. Use us in the way that you see fit. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide us where we need to go. Allow us the chance to show you how much we truly love you by simply obeying your direction.
In Jesus Name
Amen
