Over the years we have all sought after joy. We all want joy in our lives and yet many of us just simply keep missing the mark. We can’t understand why joy so hard to find. The truth is joy can never be found without a good old dose of gratitude.
Pursuit of Joy
In today’s culture, we have learned that joy can come through the pursuit of things. We have been conditioned to think that when we have thicker banking accounts, fancier cars, the top of the line in all the gadgets, and overall the best of the best we will be happier. What we have forgotten is that true joy comes from Christ and Christ alone and it can only be found by making gratitude a way of life.
In order to find true joy….Joy that is actually going to bring us peace and set us apart from the rest of the world is to actually pursue gratitude.
Gratitude: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
How we take time to appreciate all that we already have in our lives plays a huge part in our own pursuit of joy because they are linked together! Of course, I would never expect you to take my word for it.
What Does the Bible Say?
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.-Colossians 3:15-20
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.—Philippians 4:4
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.—Romans 12:12
This life was never supposed to be easy. But, we serve a God who is faithful and who is just. We serve a God who longs for us to have joy that only He can provide.
4 Ways We Can Practice Gratitude
- Strive to focus on God alone: Many times we allow life to change our focus and usually this isn’t for the best.
- Practice finding the good in any situation: There is good to be found in all situations. It doesn’t matter how small, it all counts.
- Keep your spirit in check: Are you complaining all the time? Are you focused more on the negative? These things steal your joy.
- Take time to write down your blessings: Keep a journal and write in it daily to keep track of your blessings. This will force you to actually find some.
Joy can be found in all seasons of our lives but we must seek gratitude to truly see it.
