Back in my wilder days I remember life being exciting and fun. I mean I could go out, do exciting things without worry and I didn’t have this urge to worry about anyone other than myself. The problem with that was even though that lifestyle was a bit interesting there was one serious problem, there were always consequences to the lifestyle I had chosen to lead. Due to those choices I was hurting myself, my family and anyone else I came in contact with.
I couldn’t understand what everyone’s problem with the way I was choosing to live my life actually was. After all I thought in those moments that my choices were mine and mine alone. This however is what those living in sin do not seem to understand. Living in sin is sweet for a season but the fact remains that in the end it becomes extremely bitter.
Food gained by fraud tastes sweet, but one ends up with a mouth full of gravel.
Proverbs 20:17
During that particular season of my life is when I met my husband. It caused a lot of friction in our relationship that honestly I never thought we would make it though. Yes, my lifestyle had put me in the position to meet my husband but it caused us a lot of heartache that caused us to really fight to make our marriage grow.
In our lives there are times when we feel as though our sin is not a big deal. We are sure that they are not hurting anyone and we are almost certain that they are not hurting us either. The fact remains that the sin that we allow into our lives leaves a nasty taste in our relationships with others and with God.
It is so important that we share these truths with others. As much as it pains us to remember a darker path that we were once going down. You see it is important to allow others to know how our sweet sinful actions caused things to turn badly for us. As Christians we know that we are forgiven of our sins. Sometimes we forget that we also need to share our past life experiences with others.
While sharing these experiences however we need to also keep in mind that we must share these truths with love and grace. After all we ourselves were once under the belief that sin is sweet. Which means that unless we handle it carefully we stand a chance of scaring that person way.
Proverbs 15:4 states:
The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.
