It is easy to lose hope in God. Sometimes it is in the moments that we later look back in life and realize that God was with us the whole time. Yet, when we are going through struggles in our lives we just don’t see it that way. At least not until we look back that is. Moses reminded me of that this week. Moses went through more in his first few months then a lot of us do our whole lives. Just when the man finds some normalcy God calls him out of his comfort again. Reluctantly Moses agrees to do as God is requesting only to see that his people are suffering because of it. This starts to cause Moses to lose hope. As a matter of fact Moses confronts God.
Our reading this week leave us off with:
Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, “O Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me?For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.” Exodus 5:22-23 (ESV)
I must confess God and I have had a few of these talks. Actually we have been having a lot more of them here lately then I do believe has ever happened. Not so much because I have lost hope but because I feel hopeless. I feel as though I am doing all that God would have of me and yet things all around me seem to keep crumpling all around me. Family situations keep backfiring, my work load seems to be increasing and every where I turn things just seem to be going the wrong way. This can cause us to lose hope in God if we are not careful.
You see we do not always know what is in God’s ultimate plan. We do not know why things are happening around us the way that they are. In fact we may never see the bigger picture. I am sure in the very beginning Moses didn’t see the big picture. All he saw was that he didn’t fit in, he felt as though people were suffering because of him and that he was hopeless.
The Devil wants us to lose hope.
Satan will cause us not to see the big picture so that we will lose hope.
So what do we do when we begin to lose hope? We do just as Moses did….
We take it straight to the source…..God
Moses called out to the only one who understood exactly what was going on. He sought guidance from the very one who sent Him on this journey. Isn’t that what we should all do? This is where our prayer life comes in… This is where our devotional times come in…. This is also where our faith comes in.
It took great faith for Moses to go back into a land that he knew he was wanted dead in. Yet, he did it. (Yes, he did hesitate a bit but he still went). Which leads me to question where is my faith.
- Am I like Moses?
- Do I lose hope after things get rough?
- Am I able to continue the walk that God has me on no matter how hard it is for me to do?
- Am I trusting in His plan and not my own?

I would like to invite you to my Facebook group Christian Homemakers in Training where we dive into homemaking, motherhood, marriage and group devotions. After all, we all need a safe place to grow together, right?
I’ve had talks like this too with God…well, crying out to Him literally in heartbreak over the diagnosis’ of Aspergers Syndrome, OCD, and ADD in my son almost 3 years ago now. That’s how my blog was born…I needed a safe place to record the roller coaster of emotions that I was feeling. I think God’s okay with us coming to Him with our questions and struggling for answers to “why”. For me, as I poured my heart out to God through tears one night alone in the darkness, He gently spoke His truth into my heart - the truth of His Word that I had hidden in my heart. Promises concerning the hope and future He has for our son of which I cling to even now in the unknown.
I think you’re right about Satan wanting us NOT to see the big picture so we will lose hope. But the big picture is that this world is not our home and we have to keep reminding ourselves of that when things don’t go as we’ve planned or even as we’ve hoped they would. Ultimately, our hope is in Heaven. That’s where our comfort is found and that is what gives us peace in whatever circumstances we have to face in this life.
I loved reading your thoughts Bridget! Praying for you to cling to the Truth you know for whatever you are facing now.
Walk in His Grace,
Laurie
We may never know all the reasons we are facing certain things in our lives. Yet, we can cling to hope. If there is nothing that we pull away from these first 5 chapters in Exodus it is that there is a bigger picture and that God is faithful even when we don’t see Him moving. Thank you so much for stopping by.
I know here lately I have once again been battling with a health issue and I find myself wondering where are you Lord? But then He reminds me that I have not left you my child I am still right here and watching you while in the valley and He also reminds me that He will carry me through it in His Time and I just need to hang on and have faith. I live the Lord and I love the Lord .
Again, great words of encouragement.
Thank you
It’s encouraging to read when other Christians struggle in this way. Just because we are Christian doesn’t mean we are immune to the ways of human nature! Work in progress!!
You are so right. We will always struggle and we will always fail. The great thing is that we have something the the rest of the world doesn’t have…..Salvation
Hi Bridget, I was in those shoes, I know it really hurts. It can be discouraging especially when you see know help in sight. The only hope is in God’s word.
God Bless you.

You are so right. Luckily we are able to gain strength from God even if we just don’t understand.
Thanks so much for sharing! I’m also blogging through the Bible and I loved reading your blog!
