How many times have we been so worried about what others will think about our homes that we just don’t invite people over or at least don’t invite them in? My famous phrase when people come over always seems to be “sorry about the mess”. Since reading the section on No More Perfect Homes in Jill Savages book No More Perfect Moms I actually had to evaluate myself.
Often times when people people call and say they are coming over I start running around the house like a mad woman trying to pick everything up. My kids have quickly figured out when company is coming because of this mad dash. My oldest son thinks that I have gone nuts. When I was growing up I was led to believe that everyone’s house should be picture perfect at all times. This was a sign that you where actually doing your job as a wife and mother. As I have grown older and threw in kids of my own the picture perfect home is no longer top of my priorities.Clean yes. Perfect no.
You see I am the type of person who can become consumed with perfection in my home if I am not careful. Living with a husband who as OCD does not help me with my struggle. Actually it helps feed the desire. However, our homes do not have to be perfect. People are not there to judge how clean your home is, what furniture you have and if you have your best towels out. Instead they are there to see you and your family.
Life is to short to worry about perfection. Life is to precious to worry about perfection. It is my goal this upcoming week to stop saying “sorry about the mess” and replace it with “we are so glad you came”.
