Reflecting back on my childhood my dad never provided us with to many “frills”. We had basic free television stations. My dad always drove used cars. We had wood heat in the winter and we stayed cool by fans in the summer. My clothes were second hand, often purchased at the local goodwill or handmade by my Grandma Peggy who also lived with me. Yes I got picked on a lot but my grandma taught me what was most important…Serving God not man. My grandma always said ” Don’t put stock in the things of this world”.
Many times I remember my Grandma signing herself and me up to do volunteer activities to reach lost souls or to raise money for whatever Church we were attending at the time. Summer vacations where spent at home studying the Bible together and bouncing from on VBS to another. Sure I complained that we never went anywhere and I also complained about not having all the things everyone else had. Looking back now I am very ashamed. You see my it wasn’t because they didn’t want me to have nice things it was that the money just wasn’t there. Shoot the money still isn’t there for me today. Yet just like my grandma I am worrying less about my children’s wants and more about their needs.
We put to much stock in the things of this world. Children are starving for spiritual knowledge. Yet we just buy them new gadgets. We work ourselves to the bone so that we can have the latest and coolest things out there. We are so caught up in the material things of this world we forget our true purpose. Reaching others.
We look down on those who have to little and envy those who have a lot. Yet Jesus spoke about this in Matthew 6:20-21. When we put these things before God then that is where our heart actually is. God could care less what model our vehicles are and if they have seat warmers. What He does care about is are we using that vehicle he has provided us with to spread His message. Now I am not saying that God doesn’t want us to have nice things. What I am saying is that these things should not be replacing Him and should not be deterring us from our calling.
How Do We Apply This:
Are your fulfilling your calling or have you become victim of setting your eyes on things instead of Heaven? Well it is not to late to change this. Maybe you could donate to a local charity instead of upgrading to the coolest cell phone. Are you being greedy with your time? Maybe you could volunteer to help a neighbor. Are you guilty of logging on the computer or flipping on the television without having any alone time with God? Maybe today is the day that you make a promise to God to put Him first.
Until Next Time Just Keep Soaring 4 Him,
I would like to invite you to my Facebook group Christian Homemakers in Training where we dive into homemaking, motherhood, marriage and group devotions. After all, we all need a safe place to grow together, right?
