So many times I see my focus falter from where I need it to be. If I am not careful I start thinking only of my selfish need and not the whole picture in front of me. Of course this often happens if I am not digging into God’s word the way that I need to. Something about this week’s reading really struck a chord with me.
You see in Genesis 25 that Esau willingly gives up his birthright for food. As Isaac’s first born he was entitled to all that Isaac had and yet he chose a bowl of food!! Esau was focused more on the present time and not the future. He was not holding his values in the right place.
So many times we all find ourselves in that very same place. We want things now instead of looking at the bigger picture. After all isn’t the present more important? What we seem to forget is that God always is there to provide and to give us the things that we need, when we need them. He is not going to let us go without the things that we truly need. Why would He after all He loves us. Yet, there are moments that we don’t get the things we think we need because there is a bigger plan at play.
We are allowed to have these feelings and urges because they are a chance for us to grow.
They are a chance for us to cling closer to God.
They are there because God needs us to learn something important.
Yet This Lesson Is Far More Than Just Our Present Situations:
What is it that we value most? Is it that others will see us as great mothers? Is it that we want to fit in with all the other women who are in our neighborhoods? When we are striving to feel the needs of this world (our selfish needs) we are actually telling God that these things are in fact more important that what He wants from us.
Instead of focusing on “fitting in” or “doing what is acceptable” we need to make sure that we are doing things that are what God wants from us. In order for that to happen we need to start valuing more about what God thinks than what those around us think. We need to hold more value in the things that are pleasing to God instead of the world.
So what is it that you hold value in? Is it in God or is it in the world?
