Rainy days here cause me to almost slow down to a complete stop. I don’t think I will ever understand that. My kids however can seem to continue through without any problem. This means no matter how I long to simply sit back, rest and possibly watch a little Netflix in my house this is simply not going to happen.
Recently I shared the different ways that I have found to keep my kids kind of wrangled in during rainy days but really these tips do not help me continue to stay motivated myself. No fear though because I have found a few ways to actually succeed in this department as well.
So how do I beat the rainy day blahs?
First and foremost I have learned to expect noise. With a small house that is filled with lots of extra hands and feet noise is something I am becoming accustom to. As a matter of fact I have come to find joy in all the noise. Now this does not mean that I do not long for quiet moments because well there is a reason I get up 2 hours before everyone else. Rainy days however, seem to cause the children to be much louder than usual. There is no stopping this and honestly I truly believe that it may not be that they are being louder than normal it is just a mom state of mind.
Secondly I have found that if I allow myself not to get dressed for the day that I let the rainy day blahs win. I have learned early on that I have to get dressed for the day in order to be productive. It sounds funny I know I am home all day why in the world would I have to get dressed but honestly if I stay in my pajamas nothing of great productivity is going to get done. When you add rain to the equation then I should have simply stayed in bed because the day is going to be a bust.
Since my children are already going to seem wired I have learned to join in on the madness. Instead of eagerly seeking quiet in the house I instead turn on upbeat music. I am one of those people who can truly be affected by the music that I am listening to. This means that the upbeat worship music or even the Frozen channel on Pandora can quickly become my best friend because it really gets me in the mood to move around instead of focusing in the fact I would much rather curl up and sleep. Plus, the kids seem to love having music playing almost as much as I do!
Something else I have discovered is rainy days is that they really are great days to clean leaving the sunny days a bit more free to enjoy the great outdoors. Mind you I have learned very quickly not to mop my floors on rainy days but everything else can be wiped out providing I get myself dressed and turn up the music. I have also discovered that when I pull the kids in on the cleaning fun I may not get done as quickly but I don’t have to constantly re-clean their messes.
Finally when all else fails take some time to rest. We all need rest and frankly we all need a day here and there to do nothing. We should not feel guilty if we need to do so. In fact we should embrace those moments (says the girl who dislikes having to sit still).
The fact still remains rainy day blahs are going to happen. However, it is up to us to conquer them with our attitudes and with a few tricks of the trade. I would love to know the ways that you beat the rainy day blahs. Feel free to comment below.
