During devotions this week I was floored. Yes, I,Bridget, was actually slapped around a bit as I have been reading through the Bible with the Good Morning Girls reading plan. What got me was that we covered so many different books and they all talked about loving others. It never said don’t love the unlovable. In fact it said quiet the opposite. This made me ponder a bit about my own self. Do I love others the way that Christ wants me to?
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 1 John 3: 14
Love….What a powerful concept. Even more so when we think of it in terms of those who strike us the wrong way. I, myself, have dealt with people who I have been more than happy to write off as lost causes.
I was wrong.
Instead this leads me to yet, another questions. What gives me the right to decide who is worthy and who is not worthy to receive the love that Christ gives us all so freely? The truth is if it were up to us Heaven would in fact be a pretty empty place. There is a reason we are not in charge of picking and choosing those who will receive redemption.
Something else I got to thinking about was….What would happen if we as Christians actually did show love to others no matter what their social standing or their religious background? Oh, my I can only imagine at the changes that could take place in this world if without uttering another word we showed love to those who drive us to our deepest and darkest places.
It would cause non-believers to a state of confusion.
We would notice attitudes changing.
Not only would we strengthen our testimony but, we would become part of someone else’s testimony.
Now, I will be the first to say that it is not easy to love others in the same way that God loves us. In fact it is very hard because we are human. But, with lots of prayers seeking understanding and wisdom it is possible. I encourage you to join me as I spend time thinking of those who I have not loved the way that they should have been. Join me not only to think about it but, to seek counsel on how to make things right.
If you are curious as to the devotions I am currently doing I have joined the Blogging Through The Bible Series hosted by Good Morning Girls at Women Living Well. It is easy to love those that are lovable but harder for those that are not. I think of the first church in the book of Acts. They devoted themselves to each other. They loved each other. May we do the same.
Love really was a huge theme in this week’s readings, wasn’t it? I felt it too. I especially felt a tug on my heart to try to be more loving towards those that aren’t as natural or easy for me to love. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
it was a huge theme this week. It was also one I am sure God knew we all needed this week. Thank you so much for stopping by.
