Since beginning our homeschooling journey I have learned that there really is no limit to the resources that are available. I mean with a little bit of creativity you can honestly have a rock solid curriculum if you put your mind to it. Using the technology that we all access on a daily basis has the doors wide open.
Recently, I figured out that my oldest son learns best if he is not required to sit still. This is a common problem when you have a child with ADHD which is ultimately why the public school system really pushes getting your children on medications (one of the main reasons why we pulled our oldest this year). Another thing that I learned is that he is not a text book learner.
Now before I get a bunch of crazy emails let me explain. He is not one who can simply read text from a book. I have to make it interactive or really all that reading did him absolutely no good. Now this is a great thing except for the fact that I am totally lacking on the creative side of things. However I am learning that with Pinterest and by simply following my oldest’s lead then we can accomplish just about anything our curriculum throws at us.
Another thing that is working for us it the use of a timer that is on my tablet. We have been using this a lot. I have notice that if I set a timer during reading time the he will focus on the reading because he knows there will be an end to the torture. Now I am hoping that eventually he will discover a love of literature however this little trick is at least getting him to focus on that brand new worlds that are between the covers of our library books.
Also I have discovered is that my son loves games. Though this is not a new discovery really however, the online free learning game resources that are available are. Recently I decided to uncover and use some of these sites. I have shared a few of our favorites on The Multi Taskin’ Mom.
When all else fails I have been pulling out the Netflix card. There are so many videos on there that we have been using when we are closing out certain units in History and Science that help really drive home the points I have been trying to make. Not to mention they have tons of pre-school geared shows that my little ones love, which makes Netflix a double win in my book.
The point is that we live in a technology driven world. Should we not allow it to help us in our homeschooling efforts?
I would love to hear some of the ways that you are using technology in your homeschooling efforts, so by all means leave them in the comments below.
